The call was issued by trade unions associated with national front-leftist combination. It had a big success in C.P.(M)dominated West Bengal and Kerala and Janata Dal-dominated Bihar and had varying degrees of success elsewhere in the country. Most of the public sector units were affected throughout the country.
A spokesman of the sponsoring committee, M.K.Pandey, said that 12 million workers and 35 lakh government employees responded to the call.
The response to the strike call is bound to have political impact with government and public servants as well as other employed sections moving politically away from the Narasimha Rao government (o partly neutralize the trend slightly favorable to the ruling party revealed by last months by-elections in different states.
