NEW DELHI: India’s Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM) have underlined the need for strengthening the country’s commercial intelligence abroad in the context of the fast changing world economic environment.

The suggestion was made at a meeting of Assocham members with commercial officers of the Federal External Affairs ministry in the light of the recent developments in Eastern Europe, the emergence of 1982 and formation of regional trading blocks.

Addressing the officers undergoing refresher course at the foreign service training institute here on Monday, Dr. B.K. Modi, member of the managing committee, Assocham, said the country’s balance of payments situation and the imperative need to step up exports, import of foreign equity and technology posed a challenged to the commercial officers to provide an effective and speedy feedback service and to act as catalysts to promote the country’s exports and industrial collaboration.

The participants opined that apex bodies of commerce like Assocham should sponsor visits of selected media men from abroad to project a correct picture of Indian economy in foreign markets.
