NEW DELHI: Over 500 candidates have filed their nominations for the two parliamentary and 17 assembly seats in the June 8 by elections in different parts of the country with the New Delhi constituency in the capital hogging all attention.

A “Starwar” of a kind is on the cards for New Delhi Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian parliament) seat with Tinsel Town heroes Rajesh Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha crossing swords and one-time bandit leader Phoolan also joining the fray in her first electoral battle.

A total 137 candidates are in fray for this prestigious seat, with 37 persons filing nominations on the last day May 14, A.C. Kher, returning officer said.

Both the Ruling Congress (I) and the main opposition’ party BJP fielded the same candidates they did in the last bye-election which was Countermanded,

Rajesh Khanna, who was renominated as the Congress (I) candidate May 13, had given a tough time to the BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani during the 1991 polls.

In all 91 aspirants have filed nominations for the bye-election. To the assembly of the south Indian state of Kamataka from three constituencies when the deadline for filing nominations ended Thursday evening.

Joint electoral officer in Kamataka told PTI here that 36 candidates have filed papers from Kunigal constituency, 34 from Gadag constituency and 21 from Belgaum constituency.  

In the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, altogether35 nominations were filed so far for Ballygunge, Berhampur and Nayagram (ST) assembly constituencies on the last day of Submitting papers Thursday, According to state election department here.

In Bihar, altogether 98 candidates have filed their nominations for one Lok Sabha and three assembly, Seals, slate election office sources Said here Thursday, . Last Thursday was the last day for filling nominations for the Giridih Lok Sabha.
