COLOMBO (PTI): Sri Lankan troops backed by air and naval support attacked Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fortifications in Madhagal area in the northern Jaffna district Feb, 23 “inflicting heavy casualties” on the Tamil militants, Sri Lankan military said.
The militants fired at the advancing troops but were forced from their positions.
The area was earlier brought under curfew by the authorities, a communiqué issued by the joint operations command said vehicles.
Bringing reinforcements for the militants were engaged in a bitter ground attack, inflicting heavy casualties and damages. Naval craft covering the front pounded terrorist positions and fortifications along the coastal line causing heavy damages, it said.
Many underground bunkers, prepared positions and to well-fortified houses were destroyed by the troops, the communiqué said, Troops returned to their Original defence lines after the Operation.
