FARIDABAD, India, Opener Sadanand Vishwanath pressed his claim for a recall by India with a powerful 80 against Pakistan.
Vishwanath, who had an intriguing duel with leg spinner Abdul Qadir, was top scorer as the Indian cricket board President’s XI made 215 for six by the close of the first day of the three-day match. Vishwanath hammered two sixes over long on and 10 fours in his comeback bid, having played 10 limited overs internationals as India’s wicketkeeper in 198485. His innings reached a peak when he took 18, including two sixes and a four, off Qadir’s first over after lunch. But the leg spinner took revenge by bowling Vishwanath with a googly and, despite punishment in one over, finished with two for 44 from 17 overs.
The President’s side were 118 for four at this stage, but test pair Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri put on 74 for the fifth wicket,
Azharuddin hit seven fours in an unbeaten 55 while Shastri, who is leading the local team, made 38.
