BONN, Jan 23, Reuter: West Germany will begin the defense of the Davis cup against promoted Indonesia next month with the same four men who surprisingly snatched the team tennis title from Sweden in December.
Coach Niki Pilic on Monday named former Wimbledon Champion Boris Becker, Patrick Kuehnen, Erick Jelen and CarlUwe Stecb in a full-strength side for the world group tie in Karlsruhe on February 35.
The four men were hailed as national heroes after they won West Germany’s first ever Davis Cup title in Gothenburg with a convincing 41 win over favorites Sweden, who were appearing in their sixth successive final.
Becker’s call up came within hours of his surprise fourth round defeat in the Australian open on Monday, the West German third seed losing 76, 64, 63 t0 Swede Jonas Swenson.
