NEW DELHI-: Sonia Gandhi and other members of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s immediate family will continue to get the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover even after the expiry of the provision for the Gandhi family in December 1994.
This assurance was given in the Rajya Sabha by Home Minister S.B Chayan during question hour last week.
Under the SPG Act the SPG cover is extended to former Prime Ministers and their immediate families upon five years after their remitting office.
Chavan told S.S Ahluwalia Suresh Pachouri Vnarayanasamy and others that the government proposed extending SPG cover to Sonia Gandhi and other members of the Rajiv Gandhi family beyond December 1994 when it was to expire.
