CHANDIGARH: Workers of the local unit of the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP) and the Mahila Nayaya Morcha held a demonstration near the Punjab Raj Bhavan to protest against the increase in crime against women in particular.

The demonstration was led by Harmohan Dhawan, former Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation. Kusma Devi, a rape victim of C.R.P.F. personnel, led the women’s group of the demonstrators.

Addressing the rally Anil Khosla president of the local unit of the S.LP., said it was a mater of concern that the crimes against women had reached its peak. He said it was unfortunate that in a majority of rape cases people in uniform were involved. “The S.J.P. will not permit the police to commit such heinous crimes under the guise of fighting terrorism,” warmed Khosla. He said S.JP. would continue its struggle until the administration took effective steps to check the crime.

Satinder Dhawan chairperson of the Mahila Nayaya Morcha, said the people of cy would no tolerate injustice being inflicted upon women. Instead of providing security cover to poor and deprived women, police were outraging their modesty. She had a dig at other political parties which were “maintaining a calculated silence over all these issues.”
