Sir,
This has reference to your talk with Dr. Kirpal Singh. We have liked the World Sikh News which is full of information especially about the Sikh community. Iam glad that Sikhs are coming out and taking part in community activities and in the process telling the people about who Sikhs are their culture, religion etc.
I thought to share my views on the subject. We try to pick every opportunity to participate in every activity.
People want to learn more about different ethnic groups, but you have to expose yourself. I have given lectures to the second classes in the “World Culture”, and “History” classes, and told about our background on religion our value system. Very recently I spoke to a class of principles and teachers of schools and colleges showed them a video film on Sikhism (got from Vancouver Sid Bentley). I had a full 2 hours Session with them and it was liked by them. I also gave lecturers to the college students in the local community college. This all raises awareness in the local people about Sikhs. American people have lots of misconceptions about Sikhs,
which could be changed if the Sikh people involve themselves in such activities. Encourage your kids also to participate in school activities besides getting good grades in schools. My daughter Jasjeet got a gold medal in speech contests in the Regional Competition besides getting other 5 medals in other activities,
By taking part in all these activities, I think we have been able to change the minds of the area residents. We try to give articles in newspapers which all help to raise the image of Sikhs.
Jagtar Singh
