(British Columbia, October 1, 1996): The recent decision to allow a religious exemption for Sikhs, who wear turbans, is a positive action on the part of the B.C. government. Minister Boone was obviously committed to truly reflect on information provided and thoroughly consider the needs of the multicultural mosaic of this Province.
The World Sikh Organization was pleased with the outcome of these deliberations and considerations that recognized the needs of a large segment of B.C. society. This is one example where, working together, British Columbians can achieve solutions through dialogue and understanding. Prompt and proactive consultation can have a considerable effect promoting long-lasting goodwill and the realization of our common goals.
NEW DELHI: India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu has changed the name of its capital city from Madras to Chennai with effect from Monday the United News of India (UNI) said. The city gave up its name acquired during British colonial rule to return to an ancient title through a bill passed by the state assembly last month. Many Tamil scholars say that Madras which is located on the Bay of Bengal coast was earlier called Chennapatnam or Chennai for short, after an ancient regional ruler, Chennappa Naicker.
