VERNON, CT: The Democratic Party committee nominated a Sikhas one of its eight candidates for the twelve member city council at the council chambers in the Town Hall here on July 26.

Five of the members nominated by the party’s town committee are incumbents and three are new candidates. Amarjit Singh Buttar, 51, is one of the three new candidates.

He immigrated to the US. in 1965. There are very few Sikhs who live in Vernon a town with a population of approximately 33,000.

Buttar, in January’ 1985, was probably the first Sikh to be a Justice of Peace. He has been a member of the Water Pollution Control Authority in Vernon since. the last six years.

Amarjit Singh holds MA English (Punjabi University Patiala) LLB (Punjab University Chandigarh) and LLM (University of Michigan Ann Arbor degrees. He is married to Mrs. Rajinder Kaur Butter and they have two sons, Gursimnit Singh (16) and Angad Singh (9).

The town council in Vernon is traditionally been Democratic and the parties candidates are expected to sweep the polls in the election scheduled on November 7.

Buttar has been active in Sikh community affairs and is the treasurer of the World Sikh Organization (International), a member of the Council of Khalistan, and the National Executive of the World Sikh Organization (USA).

Speaking with WSN Buttar said, “ Having lived in the worlds so called largest democracy, which I personally believe is worlds biggest hypocrisy, I feel proud and privileged to run for an election office in the world’s finest democracy.”
