BEIRUT, LEBANON: Shiite Muslim fundamentalists and other candidates vowing to fight Israel made additional gains in Lebanon’s first parliamentary elections in 20 years, according to initial election returns Monday.
But in their first contesting of seats since independence from France in 1943, the fundamentalists have only a small portion of the 128 Parliament members. The Legislature will be half-Christian and half-Muslim under the agreement that ended Lebanon’s 15year civil war,
