NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister Mr Chandra Shekhar said the situation in the country had reached a flashpoint and that we cannot afford to sit back but time has come for a social change.”

Inaugurating the first meeting of the two-day session of the national youth council here he said youth had an important role to play in bringing about social change and removing regional developmental imbalances which were the main cause of insurgencies and unrest in the country.

Admitting that neither use of coercion nor state power could help in bringing about social changes the premier said it was imperative for the youth to play an important role in alleviating poverty and illiteracy.

He said illiteracy was increasing rapidly and the youth should work hard to remove the existing imbalances in society.

Mr Chandra Shekhar said it was important for the youth to be aware of their ancient tradition and culture as it played an important role in the progress and welfare of the nation.

He regretted that traditional values were being forgotten in the name of modernism and that is why the nation was not able to achieve progress.

The prime minister emphasized that of Modernism and that this is why the nation was not able to achieve progress.

The prime minister emphasized that youth were the future of the nation and that they must bear in mind these traditional values while striving to work for the national welfare.

He said the task of nation building was stupendous and called upon the youngsters to actively participate in the process.

The premier blamed the existing social system for the present day frustration and unhappiness among the youth

However he said to overcome this it was necessary to mobilize youth power and remove unemployment which was growing among the youth.

Among others who addressed the meetings were the ministers for human resource development Mr Raj Mangal Pandey.
