CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Pradesh Congress I president, Hans Raj Sharma said that peace in Punjab was possible only with a political alliance of Hindus and Sikhs.

Talking to newsmen here Sharma said they should not reply upon a third force by which he meant the government of India. He said they should look to each other and not against each other.

He favored assembly elections in Punjab to restore peace and normalcy. He said those who were putting the condition of normalcy before elections were playing in the hands of vested interests would create an explosive situation with unlimited resources at their disposal anytime.

He said elections to Panchayats and local bodies should be held only after the assembly polls. He called upon Prime Minister VP Singh to call Mann and other effective and relevant forces to solve the Punjab problem. He said if talks could be held with militants in the northeast then why not in Punjab? If the then prime minister Indira could order elections in Assam when violence there was at its peak and Rajiv Gandhi could do so in crisis ridden Punjab there was no reason the govt could not do it now.
