JAMMU: The Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead an area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, while villagers repulsed an attack by armed militants at separate places in Doda district.
According to a report from Srinagar, the police foiled an attempted dharna in the heart of Srinagar city by arresting the Peoples’ League supremo, Shabir Ahmad Shah and his spokesman. Shah, who is a senior leader of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), had called for a dharna at Lal chowk in Srinagar to protest against the alleged “repressive measures.”
Sources said that some individuals opened fire at a BSF patrol party on the outskirts of Kishtwar town; The BSF fired back killing Iqbal Mohammad, and area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen.
The security forces also recovered the body of another Hizbul Mujahideen activist at village Dugga in the district Pointing out that the deceased was injured in an encounter ‘with security forces two days ago, sources identified him as Mehmood Ahmed, a former police head constable who had deserted the state police to join militants.
Meanwhile, a village defense committee repulsed an attack by some militants at village Lalaran in Kishtwar tehsil of the district. However, none of the villagers was injured in the firing by militants.
Three militants were among 10 persons killed in Kashmir Valley where security forces nabbed 20 militants, including a self-styled district chief of Al Jehad. A powerful blast damaged two security vehicles while timely detection of two explosive devices averted tragedies during the period, an official spokesman said.
An unidentified ultra was killed in an encounter with security forces at Khumriyal in frontier district of Kupwara March 7th, he said.
