AMRITSAR: The SGPC is seriously considering a proposal to app roach the Supreme Court for getting vacated the stay on holding of its annual elections of the President, other office bearers and the 11member Executive, it is reliably learnt.
Following the proposal made by the SPGC Secretary, Mr Manjit Singh Calcutta, a couple of legal experts are being consulted to challenge the stay order granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court last year on the Sikh body’s presidential elections which are normally held in the last week of November every year. As the filing of a writ petition with the highest court will take some time, there is no likelihood of the annual SGPC poll taking place this year, according to knowledgeable sources.
It will be for the first time in the 64yearold history of the apex body that its general house will not meet because of an extra ordinary legal situation arising out of the stay of the Executive polls by the High Court. As per the provisions in the Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1923, it is mandatory for the SGPC general house to meet twice a year in November for the annual elections and in March for passing of the budget.
Mr Manjit Singh Calcutta said today that there was a move to hold a general house meeting on November 17 or 18.
