NEW DELHI: New govt’s assumed office on Monday in Tamil Nadu Kerala and Uttar Pradesh continuing the process of ministry formation in the states that recently had assembly elections The first pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party govt took over the reins of govt in Uttar Pradesh with the swearing in of an 18 member two tier council of ministers by the governor B. Satyanarayanna Reddy in Lucknow. There are 11 cabinet ministers and seven ministers of stat in the ministry headed by Kalyan Singh. An 18 strong council of ministers was also sworn in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK team headed by the party general secretary Jayalalitha was administered teh oath of office and secrecy by Governor Bhishma Narain Singh. In Kerala the Congress (I) led united democratic Front has returned to power again after a gap of four years with the swearing in by governor Rachaiah of a six member ministry headed by K. Karunakaran. The process of new govt’s taking over in states where assembly polls were held began on Sunday with an cight member Congress (I) ministerial team headed by Bhajan Lal assuming office in Haryana in northern India
In west Bengal where the ruling left front retained its grip on power the new govt will be sworn in on Tuesday.
In Assam also in the cast a Congress (I) ministry headed by Hiteswar Saikia will be sworn in on Thursday. The Congress (I) has returned to power in the state after a gap of five years.
In the union territory of Pondicherry the Congress (I)’s claim for forming the govt has been accepted by the LT governor Har Swar up Singh who will now advise the president on the matter
Under the union territories act the president has to appoint the chief minister and his council of ministers.
While the Congress (1) and the AIADMK have contested the polls as allies in the union territory the latter has decided to stay out of the ministry.
In Kerala the united democratic front ministry replaces Marxist led united democratic front govt. In Tamil Nadu the AIADMK govt comes to power after a spell of president’s rule that followed the dismissal of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam govt.
In Pondicherry also the removal of the DMK led coalition govt was followed by president’s rule.
President’s rule was also imposed in Haryana following the removal of the Samajvadi Janata Party govt led by OM Prakash Chautala which was reduced to a minority. In Uttar Pradesh SJP is replacing the minority Samajwadi Janata party govt led by Mulayam
Elections were held in May and June for the assemblies of Tamil Nadu Kerala UP Haryana West Bengal Assam and Pondicherry along with 511 Lok Sahba seats. In Punjab Lok Sabha and assembly elections originally scheduled for June 22 have been put off till September.
