BHUBANESWAR, (PTI): Seven persons were killed and over 200 fishermen were reported to be missing in the severe cyclone which hit the eastern Indian Orissa coast on June 19, according to official sources.
All the seven casualties occurred in Puri district with six people being crushed to death under up footed trees in the Pipli Tehsil while another was swept away in a stream near Nayagarh, the sources said.
According to commissioner cum-secretary in the revenue department S.R. Pal of 300 fishermen who had gone into the Chilka lake for fishing from Jagualipada village, about 100 had since returned home safely.
Stating that the earlier official report about 60 fishermen who had ventured into the deep sea from Pathankot a in Puri was “not correct”, Pal said that only 16 people had gone into the sea of whom 10 had so far returned to the shore.
The state government had requested the eastern naval command to conduct a search for the remaining six missing fishermen, he said.
