CLOMEBO, Reuter: At least seven people including four guerrillas were killed to day when Tamil separatists attacked the main security camp in Sri Lanka’s northern province, the government said.
The information department said in a communiqué that guerrillas fired mortar bombs at the Jaffna North injuring two soldiers; Troops hit back killing four men.
Jafina residents told Reuters by telephone that three civilians were killed and 18 wounded in cross fire, the injured were being treat cd at the local hospital.
One journalist there said a mortar bomb exploded close to his office damaging electricity wires and plunging the office and other nearby areas into darkness. We are not printing the morning newspaper tonight because there is no power supply and most of the employees want to go home, he said before rushing home.
A government spokesman said the mortar attacks on the camp were intended to disrupt peace talks between the government and moderate Tamils.
The government said last week that security forces at the Jaffna camp would be compelled to retaliate if provoked by rebels.
Earlier, the information department said six people including a government official were killed in guerrilla activity in northern and eastern areas.
