CHANDIGARH: The Congress Party, on Oct.2, suffered a setback pause while maintaining its overall lead winning maximum of the seats in the in the direct elections to the panchayats samitis and the zila parishads. The ruling party Jost the Amritsar and Faridkot zila parishads to the Akali 4 Sahib and Sangrur zila parishads to Akali Dal (Amritsar). Of the 978 scats out of 983 Panchayat samiti seats for which the results have been Congress captured 402 seats, Akali Dal (Badal) 179, Akali Dal (Amritsar) 89. the t Party of India seven: 45, the Bharatiya Janata Party six, the Communist Party of India 13, the Communist and the independents 197 seats.
In the zila parishads, out of 264 results declared so far of the 273, the Congress is leading with 114 seats. The Akali Dal (Badal) won 59, Akali Dal (Amritsar) 43, BSP 17, BJP one, CPI one. CPI (M) four and independents 25. In Amritsar zila parishad, the Akali Dal (Badal) swept into majority with 13 seats followed by Congress with eight seats, Akali Dal (Amritsar) two and independent one.
