CHANDIGARH: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Gurcharan Singh Tohra on July 4 sought the intervention of Governor Surendra Nath against the proposed move of the state government to send Punjab Police commandos to Assam .

The SGPC chief told media persons here that he would meet the Governor and submit a memorandum against the move which his felt would harm the Sikhs in Assam He described it as a conspiracy and discrimination against Punjab. He said it was the policy of the Center to send people from one community to crush the movements launched by the other con munity for the maintenance of regional identities and cultures

He supported all such democratic and peaceful movements saying the national and regional loyalties could co-exist. He regretted that the government earlier destroyed the Punjabi identity. He expressed the apprehension that the Sikhs in Assam would be treated as enemies and be the target of hate as part of this policy of the government. He said the people in the state should raise their voice against the move.

He said even in Kashmir the government had mainly deployed Sikh troops.
