BERKELEY, Ca: The Second Annual California Universities Conference on South Asian Studies will focus on Sikh studies. Funded by a generous grant from Maughan fund established to promote Sikh studies on campus, the conference will be jointly sponsored with the Graduate Theological Union of Berkeley. Assistance of the Sikh Foundation has greatly enhanced our ability to field such a major international conference. Considerable interest in Sikh studies has been expressed in the Berkeley academic community and nationwide in recent years. Our conference will take place in collaboration with a similar meeting held at the University of Toronto in early February.

Participants will include eight scholars from India whose travel costs are being supported by the Smithson Institution.

U.C.B. and the G.T.U. (represented by Professor Mark Juergensmeyer) initiated a first Berkeley International Conference on Sikh Studies a decade ago. The forthcoming meeting is the second such conference and will field papers on Sikh language and literature, pretwentieth century Sikh history, anthropological and sociological studies of Sikhs, and Sikhism and Sikhs abroad. Those wishing to participate in the forthcoming South Asian conference should contact Jane Singh at the Center.

The tentative participation of an international panel of scholars including Professor Owen Cole (Bishop Otter College, England), Professor W.H. McLeod (University of Otego, New Zealand), Professor J.S. Grewal (Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar), Dr. Mohinder Singh (editor of Studies in Sikhism and Comparative Religion) and Professor Wilfred C. Smith (Toronto University) should make this an exceptional international meeting.

The conference will begin with a reception on Friday afternoon, February 20, 1987, to be followed by a dinner and evening lecture. Sessions will be scheduled all day Saturday; the conference will conclude with a Sunday morning session, February 22, 1987.
