AMRITSAR: A boarding school will shortly be started at the police line here to provide a secure environment for the children of the police personnel posted in this sensitive border range.

The officers in charge of the project have decided not to wait for the next academic session or the approval of the state education department. The school is ex-to open before January and would be run with aid from the police welfare fund. Its chairman, the director general of police, Mr K.PS. Gill, will be the patron of the school’s managing committee.

The necessity for such a school arose following complaints by policemen that their children lived under the constant threat of attacks and consequently their education had suffered. Fear for their children’s lives has affected the morale of the police personnel, many of whom had withdrawn their children from schools and sent them to safer places.

Moreover, of late, there had been more abductions of policemen relatives.

Earlier, the police authorities had decided to run a hostel for the school going children at Amritsar and accommodate them in different local schools. Most principals contacted reacted favorable to the idea but felt that since most of the students were from Punjab medium rural schools they would not be able to cope with the standard of urban English medium schools.

Ultimately, the proposal to start boarding school was approved the DGP during his last visit in Amritsar.

Buildings for housing the school and the hotels have already been identified.
