NEW DELHI :S.S. Ahluwalia, Congress-I  member of the Rajya Sabha and a part of the so-called “shouting brigade” apprehended on Tuesday that he had definite information “some newspapers in foreign countries, particularly Singapore” might soon carry “fabricated” reports of financial scandals implicating the late Rajiv Gandhi and close relatives of his widow, Sonia Gandhi. Ahluwalia said his suspicion was based on reports he had received of the “activities” of the controversial god man Chandra Swamy “during his recent visit to Singapore”.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ahluwallia charged that “a number of un- scrupulous but resourceful persons” had recently visited Singapore and Switzerland to generate “fictions documents” for maligning Gandhi. He suggested that the sole purpose of the exercise was to restrain Mrs. Gandhi from entering active politics. He said that a “gang” was active in pre- venting her from filing her nomination for by-election to the Amethi constituency. He added that the “gang” was following the same strategy which the Opposition had adopted, “which is one of continuing with a smear campaign begun by a section of the foreign media”.
