AMRITSAR: The SGPC urged the Central Government to ensure the protection of the historic Sikh shrine in Baghdad which was being bombed.

In a telegram to the Prime Minister the secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta said to SGPC was also trying to contact Sikhs in Iraq to know about their welfare and the shrine which was looked after by the Central Sikh Committee.

Only about a year ago the Iraqi government had allowed the opening of the Gurdwara built after Guru Nanak Dev on the bank of the Firaat River.
