NEW DELHI: Sardar Swaran Singh, a former Union Minister and an architect of national reconstruction, died here, on Oct.30, following a cardiac arrest. He was 87. Mr. Swaran Singh, who was convalescing at his daughter’s house here, had complained of uneasiness around midnight on Saturday night. He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital but died before he could be admitted. The body was consigned to. A flame with full state honors at the Lodhi Estate cremation grounds ‘on Sunday after noon. Mr, Swaran Singh’s nephew Balbir Singh, a member of Parliament from Punjab, lit the funeral pyre as an ‘Army contingent fired a farewell salute and sounded the last post.

Wreaths were placed on the body by a galaxy of prominent leaders, including Vice-president K. R. Narayanan, former President Zail Singh, and Home Minister S. B. Chavan. Meanwhile in Chandigarh, the Punjab Government has declared three day state mourning in memory of the late leader.
