CHANDIGARH: Mr. Kabal Singh, acting Chief of Shromani Gurdwara Parhandhak Committee was unanimously elected president at the general budget of the S.G.P.C. held here on March 23rd, 1986. His name was proposed by Mr. MS. Oboke, the revenue minister and was approved by Mr. Gopal Singh and Mr. Darshan Singh Iasapuri. Mr. Kabal Singh who was admitted to the Jullundur Civil Hospital after the Kapurthala firing incident, was elected president for one year. Mr. Gurcharan Singh Tohra, and Mr. Prem Singh Lalpura were not present at the general session. Mr. Sujit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister and President of Akali Dal, had announced his name as an official party candidate of the ruling party on Friday. Mr, Kabal Singh was acting president of the S.G.P.C. after Mr. Tohra resigned from the post of Presidency on Feb. 16, 1986 in the Sarbat Khalsa meeting and his resignation was accepted ‘on March 2, 1986. The general ‘Assembly passed S.G.P.C. Budget ‘and also passed a number of resolutions which include the condolence motion on Mr. Jagiit Singh Rode’s death, condemned the pole action against the agitators in Chandigarh, demanded the implementation of the Punjab Accord, and to hold general elections of S.GP.C. A call to unite the Hindu and Sikh communities was also given. The general house also passed the annual budget for 10.71 crore rupees for the year 198687. ‘The budget showed deficit of rupees 64 lakhs which will be covered through the last year’s savings. The budget speech was read out by Mr, ‘Onkar Singh Matenangal, the General Secretary of the S.G.P.C. Mr. Kabal Singh who is still in the Civil Hospital, Jullundur demanded from the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, to hold S.G.P.C. elections within a period of three months.
