BOMBAY: An award of Rs.5 lakh has been instituted by the ministry of health and family welfare for the best film highlighting family welfare and population problems to be shown at the seven day second Bombay international film festival for documentary short and animation films to be held here from February 1.

The award equivalent 10 $20000 will be the highest to be awarded at the festival and the purpose of introducing it is to mobilize the creative talents from all over the world to produce outstanding films on this subject Vijay B.Chandra director told a news conference Wednesday.

He said nearly 500 filmmakers from all over the world were expected to attend the prestigious festival which was offering prizes totaling Rs.17 lakhs as also trophies to award winning films in various categories.

The venues for the festival being organized by the Union government in association with the government will be the National Center for the Performing Arts and the — newly operated Yesh wantrao Academy complex at Nariman Point”.

A special section on animation films had been introduced (Chandra said. The best film would be awarded Rs.2.50 lakh and a golden conch. A special award of Rs.1 lakh was instituted for deserving films of equal merit as recommended by the international jury of the first film festival.

The Indian Documentary Producers Association has instituted: a trophy for the best film by a new generation filmmaker.

Films produced in the last three years will be shown in the information section.
