AGARTALA: Factionalism in the Tropura CPM has surfaced during the course of the local committee conferences being held here in preparation for the party’s State conference in November.

In a virtual tug of war the official faction of the party led by Nripen Chakraborty has been pitted against the dissidents who have been trying to wrest control of the local committees and the section of delegates for the coming divisional committee conference

The dissidents have made major inroads into the official action’s hold over at least eight of the 26 local committees in the sadar subdivision. In several others had dissidents have made their presence felt.

The points which dominated the discussions during the local committee conferences were the “organizational inertia aversion to mass movements and suppression of inner-party democracy” by the ruling faction of the party headed by Nripen Chakraborty with the active “collaboration” of party secretary Dasharar Deb.

In most cases the state leadership came in for sharp criticism for failure to revive the party machinery. The dissidents alleged that to retain their “stranghold the official faction had resorted to various “unethical machinations and manipulations” which were not sanctioned by the party constitution.

Before the series of local committee conferences began the secretariat had sought to restrict young rights in the conferences. But sensing the rising dissent the decision was suddenly reversed and young rights granted even to candidates.
