MADRAS: Reaction appears to be building up among Tamils against the Indian government’s handling of Tamil youths on the pretext of solving the Rajiv Gandhi assassination mystery.
The Dravada Munetra Kazagam headed by former Chief Minister Karunanidhi which represents Tamil nationalism has won two Assembly seats of Agmore and Harbour in by-elections held there last week. The party had tailed to get any seat except for one represented by Karumanidhi himself in the last general election.
A special investigation team appointed by Delhi to investigate the Rajiv murder case has held hundreds of Tamil youths for torture. More than a dozen have died. The police claim that these youths died after consuming cyanide but many people suspect that the suspected key men in the murder case are deliberately being eliminated in extra-judicial proceedings. The government of India itself encourages these extra-judicial killings because it fears that any hearing of the case will bring to the fore basic Delhi-Tamil differences and will end up resurrecting the dormant Tamil nationalism in Tamil Nadu.
