WASHINGTON: Dr.Prem Sann an AIDS researcher who worked at the National Institute of Health (NIH) the country’s premier medical research hospital has been sentenced to two months imprisonment for embezzling $25000 earmarked for AIDS research.
Prem Sarin 57 a native of New Delhi who had faced up to 20 years in prison pleaded for leniency citing a need to continue: his research.
Sarin contended in the court that he is a victim of a vendetta by a US congressional committee investigating scientific claims of Sarins former boss at the NIH AIDS expert Robert Gallo.
Garbis however rejected public prosecutor Dale P.Kelbermans recommendation that Sarin be given a stiffer punishment.
