CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Police Chief and the advisor to Governor Punjab Julio Ribeiro praised the Punjab police in GurdaSpur district for carrying out their duty in an exemplary fashion. The police in this district, specially the SP of the area Gobind Ram have been under strong criticism by Human Rights Groups for their inhuman treatment of suspects and innocent people.
The SP was accused recently of lining up the village level leaders and getting them lashed. In swom testimony a number of people have accused him of personally participating in the torture of suspects and of even shooting them.
Ribeiro said that the police was working in difficult circumstances and deserved all the support of the people and the government.
The fact that such a senior Official has singled out the district for public praise and approval is seen as a device to encourage other police officers to behave in a similar fashion.
