CALCUTTA: It was a historic occasion for Indian Cinema when the ailing film maker Satyajit Ray personally received the special Oscar award from two representatives of the U.S. Academy of motion pictures in his hospital bed here on March 16
Ray looked emotional as he received the dazzling metal statuette from Al Schwartz and David Plakos who flew in from California to hand over the honor.
Present at the intensive cardiac care unit of the Belle Due Clinic, where Ray was admitted on January 27, were Rays wife Vijaya and film maker son Sandip besides family friend Dalip Basu, Ray who had been suffering from heart ailment and respiratory trouble was reported to be “better and he had no breathing trouble, his family said.
The two kg statuette had its base inscribed with academy honorary award to Satyajit Ray in recognition of his are mastery of the art of motion pictures, 1992.”
