NEW DELHI: Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao Monday said his govt would try to find a solution to the Punjab problem within a couple of days in consultation with the various political parties.

Addressing a group of Youth Congress-I workers at his residence here, Rao said now that his 25-day-old had transacted the important business of seeking and winning the vote of confidence in Parliament, it would from Tuesday address itself to the task of resolving the Punjab crisis.

The Congress-I had opposed holding of elections in Punjab but the previous Chandra Shekhar govt not heeded the party’s advice and announced elections, he said.

Large-scale violence had followed the poll announcement and many candidates were killed. Ultimately, the elections in Punjab had to be postponed, he added.

Rao said “we will discuss this issue with the other political parties and within the Congress-I and the youth and the people.”
