NEW DELHI (PTI): India’s Supreme Court Judge, Justice V.Ramaswami, who survived Parliament’s Impeachment vote recently, announced his resignation May 14.
Ramaswami, 64, survived the Impeachment motion after being charged with “misbehavior” and private use of public funds during his tenure as chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court between) L987 and 1989 by a three member committees.
The opposition sponsored motion fell through for want of requisite majority as205 members of the Ruling Congress1 party abstained from voting through 196 MPs’ voted for it.
The judge said the “defeat of the motion had vindicated his stand and “safeguard for the future fearless and independent judges from scurrilous attacks on calumny from motivated persons.
“Now, haying achieved this, I have neither the desire nor the inclination to serve on the court,” the judge, who had been at the Center of a political and legal storm for the past over two years: said.
Justice Ramaswami said his “resignation from the Supreme Court will be sent to the president Of India in due course. I thank all those who stood by me and by the judiciary in this critical hour.”
