BHUBANESWAR: Rajiv Gandhi, has said that Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar must take a quick decision to tackle the Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir problems.
It was too early to comment on the performance of the present minority government, he told journalists at the airport before emplaning for New Delhi here Dec7, after a daylong tour of Ganjam district of West Bengal state where large areas were devastated by floods last month.
Some things have improved. But on Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir a quick decision was required,” he said.
Gandhi said the number of violent incidents had decreased after the exit of the previous V P Singh government and “even in Ayodhya the situation was cooler by five to ten per cent.
Replying to a question on Assam, the Congress (I) president denied the allegation by the ousted Assam chief minister that his party was behind the imposition of central rule in the state.
”We are supporting the government but we have nothing to do with governance. I believe Shekar consulted many people including the Congress I before imposing president’s rule in Assam”.
He asked “What the National Front has to say in the context of the discovery of dead bodies and graves of the people killed by the ULFA in Assam”. The Assam Gana Parishad government was a constituent of the national front and ULFA was “very much” part of it and was directly helped by the party, he alleged.
