CHANDIGARH: Professor Darsharn Singh has appealed to the people to gherao (cordon off peacefully) the Governor’s residence at Chandigarh on September 8 to register their protest against police brutalities especially against women in Punjab and for the suspension of SSP Gobind Ram.

The latest among the publicized atrocities were the detention and torture in Batala of Mrs, Gurmit Kaur and Mrs, Gurdev Kaur, wives of Babbar Khalsa activists. Gobind Ram is said to have personally tortured the two women. Mrs. Gurdev Kaur was released on August 27 a day after their arrest in

such a terrible condition that she was unable even to speak. Prof Darsharn Singh presented her to the people on a stretcher.

Mrs. Gurmit Kaur was released on September 3 after a massive Protest outside the police station and a habeas corpus petition was filed on her behalf,

The protest on Sept 1 was well Represented by Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Prominent among the leaders present were Justice Bains, J.S. Talwandi, K.S. Badala, S.S. Chotepur, H.S. Sandhu, N.S. Kahlon, MS. Calcutta, Hani Singh Arewala Parkash S. Majitha and Kuldip Kaur.
