NEW YORK, NY: Poets wove a Phulkari of Punjabi poetry in which the colorful designs were filled with creative works of scribes from both parts of the subcontinent, who had got together to celebrate their love of the language of the land of five rivers. It was an evening to remember.

The function was organized last Friday by the Pakistan League of America with Mamun R. Aiman, who teaches English in the New York Board of Education and is an Urdu and punjabi poet, as the chief coordinator. 17 Punjabi poets, both Sikhs and Muslims participated in the Mushaira and read their works.

Amongst the prominent poets were Dr. Akhtar Ahsen, Tahir Asadi, S.M. Ashi, Naveed Gitani, Nadia Ali Khan, Shorza Khawza, Randhir Singh, Manohar Singh Marko, Jamil Nayyar, Rani Naginder, Rauf Shaikh, Dr. Ramji Dass Sethi, Kuldeep Singh, Ra jinder Singh, and Sardar Khan Soz,

Rauf Sheikh was given the Life time Achievement Award and Mamud R. Aiman the Pioneer’s award.

The event was the first of its kind and its success has encouraged the participants and the organizers to hold such events in the future. Mamud R. Aiman the per son who was primarily responsible for the coordination of the event told WSN”, we have differences of faith and countries but we share the love of the language and culture of Punjab. This Mushaira was ‘Organized to stress on our common Cultural ties.”
