CHICAGO: The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (P.C.S.) celebrated its annual awards night and appreciation dinner banquet at the north shore banquet hall in Chieago on May 20,1994; close to 400 guests and dignitaries were in attendance.
Darshan Singh Dhaliwal of Wisconsin and Dr. Surjit Singh Patheja of Indiana were the guests of honor. Nearly 200 youth participants and organizers of P.C.S.’s colorful Vaisakhi cultural program “Rangla Punjab “94” Were thanked, appreciated and given awards by the Sponsors and veteran community leaders Dr. Surjit Singh Patheja, Jasmair Kaur Kolar, Dr.Jagiit Singh Teji, Debra and Darshan Singh Dhaliwal.
Famous Punjabi poet Sabar Hussain Sabar of Chandigarh recited his poetry and his new audio cassette “Saga Peer Budhu Shah” was formally released by Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago at this function announced by radio host Manjit Singh Gill.
Dr. Robert Singh, Dr. Surjit Singh Patheja and Darshan Singh Dhaliwal were honored and presented with honor award plaques for their excellence in supporting Punjabi community cultural events.
Thakar Singh Basati was presented with a golden gift watch by the children team that he coached.
The “Gidha” girls and the “Bhangra” boys danced their way in ecstasy to the podium to accept their trophies.
The program was conducted by the community youth Amntpaul Singh Chopra, Raminder Kaur Birdj, Navraz Kaur Basati, Gurmit Kaur and the awards committee chairman Maninderjit Singh Saini.
“The P.C.S. officials worked behind the scenes to encourage youth to come forward and take charge,” said Rajinder Singh Mago a founding member of the society, “the purpose of the P.C.S. is to promote Punjabi culture and to nourish and hamess local talent,” he added.
The budding artists Nuvpreet Singh Bhandal, Ajaipal Singh, Ramita Chawla and Bubbly Babbarchanned the audience with Bhangra dance items. The guests had a ball on the dance floor dancing the night away to the endless Punjabi Bhangra music conducted by the DJ. Shiy Chawla. The Punjabi cultural society’s next Vaisakii program “Rangla Punjab “95” was also announced presented by: Rajinder Singh Mago.
