CHANDIGARH: Caught between the lure of revenue and the overall public interest the Punjab Government is having a fresh look at the existing lottery system in the state.
There are about 200 lotteries in the market out of which 14 daily lotteries arc being run by the State Government through sole selling agents Not so long ago the State Government was running 16 lotteries but two of them folded up earlier this month when the sole selling agent backed out of the agreement.
With more and more people getting addicted to lotteries because of their sale in every nook and comer of the Cities and towns the demand for banning them is gaining ground. The State Government has also been receiving Communications in this regard from the Central Government
According to sources banning the lotteries is a ticklish issue. While the State Government can ban only its own and private lotteries in doing so it will not only lose its revenue but also leave the field open for the lotteries run by other states.
