PATIALA, Punjab, India: The top honors on the con clouding day of the Punjab State Games here were reserved for international athlete Sugit Kaur of Jullundur.

She created a new national record in 5,000 meters, eclipsing the old record of V.N. Khalko of Biharset up at the Ranchi Interstate Meet in May this year. She ran majestically to compete the distance in a time of 18 ‘minutes two seconds, against the previous best of 18 minutes 36 seconds.

Aruna Rani of Jullundur, who won the silver, also bettered the record, clocking 18 minutes 23.9 seconds; Surjit Kauralso earned the distinction of being adjudged the Best Athlete among women.

The honor in this case in the men’s section went to interactional long distance runner Tara Singh of Kapur thala the overall trophy was annexed by hosts Patiala with 261 points. Their ‘medal tally read 342134. They were followed by Jullundur (203 points) with 202628 medals. Amritsar finished third silver and 18 bronze. Feroze pur district finished last with only one ‘bronze

The team championship in men’s athletics was won by Sangrur, who collected 65 points. Patiala (43) and Jullundur (24) were placed second and third, while Kapurthala (22), were fourth,

Jullundur district won the team championship in the women’s section (28) Kapurthala (22) finished below in that order.

Balkar Singh Faridkot won the 800 meters for men. His timing was one ‘minute 52.8 seconds clocking 1:54.4, while Sukhcharan Singh of Patiala finished a shade behind at 1:54.5,

Jullundur’s Kuldeep Kaur jumped to a distance of 4.96 meters, winning the gold in long jump. Satnam Kaurof Ludhiana (4.78 m) and Rajvinder Kaur of Ropar (4.67 m) collected the silver and bronze, respective. Kuljit Kaur of Kapurthala clocked 59.01 seconds to emerge the winner in the women’s 400 meters final. Rajwant Kaurof Jullundur got the silver with a timing of (1:004 seconds) while Kuljit Kaur of Amritsar (1:00.7 sec) got the bronze.

Earlier, Sumit Kaur of Jullundur ‘won the 800 meters race with a timing of 2:19 seconds. Clocking 2:25.5 seconds. Swamjit Kaur of Amritsar got the second spot and Rajbinder Kaur of Sangrur earned the bronze with a timing of 2:35.7 seconds.

In the last event of the day, the 4×400 meters relay. The Sangrur boys ‘rubbed the top honors with a timing of 3:222 seconds. The Patiala team (325.0 seconds) got the second place, while Ludhisna (3.274 seconds) set led for the bronze.

FOOTBALL

Kapurthala district came from behind to beat Gurdaspur in the final of the football event,

The teams were locked in a cliff hanger up to75 minutes when Gurdas pur {took the lead. However, a minute before the long whistle the Kapurthala boys earned a well-deserved equalizer. They ultimately emerged (31) winners in extra time.

Patiala got the third place, defeating Ludhiana 30. The highlight of the match was the first hat trick of the {football championship by former junior international Om Parkash.
