CHANDIGARH: The top police administration in peacetime Punjab will have five officers of the rank of Director General of Police (DGI) with the decision of the state government to promote two Additional Director Generals of Police.
‘The decision to promote S.R. ‘Sharma, ADGP (Railways), and P.c ogra: ADGP (Operations), was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Beant Singh. Besides K.P.S. Gill, the other officers presently of this rank are O.P. Sharma,DGP (Intelligence), and Suba Singh DGP (Vigilance), Sharma, on deputation from Uttar Pradesh, is due for retirement in October next and SR, Sharma in December next.
There is only one cadre post of the DGP and the remaining four are ex-cadre posts.
An official spokesman, said there would not be any consequential promotions as the ex-cadre posts would cease to exist with the retirement of the officers concerned.
Punjab has a cadre strength of 142 TPS officers and 51 of them are of the ranks of DIG, IGP, ADGP and the DGP. They include five DGPs, five ADGPs, 171GPsand 24 DIGs. All the officers up to the 1966 batch have been promoted as ADGPs. Official sources point out that in case of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, officers of the 1967 batch have been promoted as ADGPs.
