Two Akali Dal factions, Akali Dal (Badal) and Akali Dal (Manjit) on Monday accepted the offer of the state chief minister, Beant Singh for an open debate on the issues concerning the state.

About 800 supporters of the proposed rally by the Bharti Kisan Union {BKU) were rounded up from various parts of Punjab on Monday even as the BKU reiterated resolve to hold the rally as Scheduled here on July 9.

BKU is planning to organize a tally on Friday to protest the resumption of work at Sutlej Yamuna link canal.

The canal project aims at giving neighboring Haryana, a non-riparian state, its share of Sutlej river waters which has been opposed by the Sikh Akali parties.

Two militants were killed in an encounter with the police near Dudher village in Barnala police district on Monday. One of them was identified as Gulab Singh alias Gulabi of the Babbar Khalsa outfit Gurmail Singh, who was being escorted by the police, was killed when a gang of militants fired at the police near Bangi Deepa village in Bathinda district. Two of the attackers, identified as Baldev Singh and Hardey Singh, were apprehended.
