BATHINDA: For neutralizing the ‘Militants, two commando battalion of the Punjab police are ready to Proceed to Assam. This was stated here last week by the Punjab “Police chief, K.P.S. Gill, who was here to hand over the possession of the houses, built by the Punjab Police Housing Corporation to Policemen.

  Gill said the two commando battalions, which were under training for specializing in combat operations in the hilly and forest areas would completed their training last week. Without disclosing the extinct date of their departure, Gill Said the battalions would march Out from Punjab to Assam shortly.

“No.” was his curt reply to a question that whether there was any possibility of review of the decision.

 Gill said that 3500 houses and 4000 barracks had been constructed by the corporation so far for policemen at the different district headquarters a part from 18 police stations and 12 residence cum-offices of the DSPs. One commando battalion complex had been built at SAS Nagar, Total expenditure on all the construction was nearly R.s 95 crore.

 Six new police stations would be constructed in the border police districts, apart from houses for the Majitha and Tara Taran police districts. The police had formulated a proposal for specially-created police districts, separate from earlier revenue districts.

Gurbachan Jagat, managing director of the corporation, said that the corporation had submitted a five year plan to state government for constructing 18000 more houses for policemen and administrative complexes at the district headquarters costing about R.s 690 crore. An exclusive mini secretariat for the Punjab police would be constructed at Chandigarh with an estimated cost of R.s 9 crore. A Sum of R.s 1 crore had been earmarked for this project.

Following the completion of the ‘secretariat, all offices of the Punjab police would come under one roof, he said.

Jagat said it was proposed to provide houses to 40% of the policemen.
