Chandigarh: A so called all party meeting convened by Punjab chief minister Beant Singh last week called for an immediate re lease of Akali leaders, a demand the stale sponsored media blacked out.
No Sikh representative participated in the meet ignoring leader to the Bahujan Samaj Party responded to the chief ministers initiative, However, other minor parties such as BJ.P, CP, CP (Mf) as well as Jagat Akali leader Jiwan Singh Umranangal and Mahant Sewa Dass of pheruman Akali Dal were present.
The chief minister reiterated his often stated position that he was not in favour of confrontation with any one and that he would try to bring about reconciliation in Punjab, a lesson evidently underlined for him by the Indian government. He did not explain whether continuing the old policy of killing youths in fake encounters, keeping them in jails and retaining hundreds of torture chambers would promote reconciliation. He “ruled out” compromise with those indulging in lawlessness, broaching secession and resorting to violence,
The initiative for the meeting, according two political observers, really came from Delhi which is
preparing a scheme for things to transfer Punjab’s water to Haryana in lieu of minor territorial adjustments and certain other peripheral Akali demands, That is precisely why the so called all
Party meeting in a resolution touted the proposal for a “fair share” from water for Punjab completely ignoring the fact that no other state had any right to share Punjab’s river water
The proceedings of the meeting are viewed by competent observers as psychological preparations for the announcement of the so called Punjab package by the Indian government,
