TORONTO: The Ontario Human Rights Commission has laid a complaint against the Peel board of education because of the board’s ruling that Sikh students cannot wear ceremonial daggers to school.
The rights commission says the Peel policy could result in Sikh students being excluded or restricted in schools on the grounds of their faith.
The Peel board approved the ban on the daggers, known as kirpans on December 12. Peel is the region just west of Toronto.
Raj Anand, the rights group Chief Commissioner, said in a release the commission hopes to get the concerned parties together to work out a compromise.
