LONDON: A gunman shot and wounded a prominent member of the Sikh community in an ambush outside the victim’s west London home, Scotland Yard said today.

A spokesman said Sangtar Singh Sandhu, 49, of the politically moderate Akali Dal party, was wounded by a shotgun blast Thursday as he stepped from his car outside his home. He was listed in “stable” condition at Hillingdon Hospital today.

Sandhu had received threats against his life in the past, but “none in recent months,” police said.

KATMANDU, Nepal— A South Korean and a Sherpa guide have scaled 19,940 foot Mount Taboche after Japanese members of their joint expedition abandoned the climb when a teammate died in a fall, the Ministry of Tourism said Thursday.

Ho Heo Young, 36, an office worker from Seoul, and guide Ang Phurba scaled the peak in Nepal’s Mount Everest region on Sunday in the mountain’s first winter ascent from the south side, the ministry said.
