A proclamation by the Mayor of San Francisco proclaiming April 30th as the Baisakhi Day in San Francisco was read by his representative Hon. Darshan Singh, Vice Chairman of Parking Authority of San Francisco.

He presented copies of the proclamation on behalf of the Mayor to Dr. Gurinder Singh Grewal President of World Sikh News, Bhai Gurmit Singh of El Sobrante Gurdwara, Bhai Gurmit Singh of Fremont, S. Charanjit Batth of Fresno and Bhai Kewal Singh Pannu of Stockton.

Following is the text of the proclamation:

WHEREAS: San Francisco is proud to HONOR and RECOGNIZE the BAISAKHI DAY of 1989, marking the 290th Birthday of the KHALSA PANTH/SIKH NATION, commemorating the occasion when GURU GOBIND SINGH, Tenth Master of the Sikhs introduced the distinctive marks of the Sikh identity; and

WHEREAS: San Francisco is pleased to extend its CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES to the Sikh Community of San Francisco on its celebration of this important anniversary; and

WHEREAS: the Sikh Community will celebrate this significant holiday with a parade/procession with participants by Sikh Temples from California and Western Canada; now THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT If, Art Agnos, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, do hereby in recognition and honor of its Sikh Community and in appreciation for its contributions to the city, proclaim April 30, 1989 as….
