NEW DELHI: Capt Amrinder Singh, a senior Akali Dal leader Friday demanded fresh inquiry into the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and elsewhere following the assassination of Indira Gandhi.

Talking to reporters, Capt Amrinder Singh said fresh inquiry should be entrusted to a high powered commission, headed by eminent persons. He said earlier efforts by the government to pin down responsibility for the riots was just a cover up by Congress (I) and it had failed to inspire confidence among riot victims.

He said the Punjab problems were the creation of Congress(I), which wanted to keep the issue alive for vested interests. He said the people of the country had given a clear verdict against Congress (I) and the Janta Dal should now take the initiative to defuse the situation.

Referring to government decision to withdraw cases against Simranjit Singh Mann, Capt Amrinder Singh said Mann had never advocated secession of Punjab and had made it clear when his name was proposed for Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament) two years ago. Despite this Mann was kept in a cell, Amrinder Singh said.(PTI).
