OTTAWA: Mac Harb (Ottawa Center): Mr. Speaker, I rise today on behalf of my col- leagues and particularly my colleague from York West.
As you know, across the country today tens of thousands of Canadians will be celebrating the 522nd anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion. As Canadians are aware, the Sikh com- munity within Canada has been a proud and vibrant one during the past 100 years, contributing to our nation’s growth and strength.
In many temples today, Canadian Sikhs will be marking this day with special reverence, Canadians should be aware that Sikhism teaches compassion, tolerance and understanding of one another and, more importantly, that the human race is one as no distinction is made between color, race, class or sex.
I am confident that all Canadians will want to join me on this day of recognition of the principle of respect for one another which were thought by Guru Nanak and which guides the lives of millions of individuals world-world. The community’s continued contribution to our nation’s development is one which they may be proud.
